At an event in Dubai, Coolpad launched its next smartphone for India, the Cool Play 6. It is an upgrade over the Cool 1 Dual launched earlier. The Cool Play 6 packs a whopping 6GB of RAM and 64GB internal storage. The processor has been upgraded to Snapdragon 653 which uses 4 high-performance Cortex-A72 cores coupled with 4 Cortex-A53 cores for more mundane tasks.

The major changes here are in the build and software. The corners are now softer on the Cool Play 6, which makes it feel better in hands. It has a unibody metal construction with a massive 4000 mAh battery which charges over USB Type-C, which as a result is non-removable. The front is mainly adorned by the 5.5-inch 1080p Full-HD display with black-bezels surrounding it. Not particularly appealing.

Cameras - Cool Play 6

Moving to the back you have dual 13MP rear cameras, one with an RGB sensor and another with a monochrome sensor. The phone is said to use both sensors to get more details in images. You also have an 'SLR' mode on the phone, using which you can mimic bokeh. The second sensor, in this case, behaves as a depth camera. You also get an 8MP front facing camera for selfies with beauty mode.

There is a fingerprint sensor on the back which works well and is quite fast. The Cool Play 6 is a dual-SIM smartphone and has two nano-SIM slots. However, the storage here is non-expandable. Thankfully, there's 64GB internal storage as opposed to 32GB on the previous variant.

Connectivity options include dual-band WiFi, Bluetooth 4.2, GPS, FM Radio but no NFC.

Journey UI - Software - Cool Play 6

There is no sign of LeEco's hideous EUI on the Cool Play 6. There's a new Journey UI which takes its place and runs on top of Android 7.1.1 Nougat with July security patch. It is still not stock Android, you have all the apps on the homescreen, there is no app drawer. But it is far easier to use than LeEco's convoluted and bloated EUI.

Moreover, there are a few neat features like dual-apps with which you can use two WhatsApp, Facebook and other accounts on the same phone.

Pricing and Availability - Cool Play 6

The Coolpad Cool Play 6 will be available in India starting September 4th, priced at Rs. 14,999. This makes it the only smartphone sub-Rs. 25000 segment with 6GB of RAM. It will be available in gold and black color, options exclusively on Amazon.in.

There is quite a huge competition brewing in this space for some time now, with the segment leader Redmi Note 4 still leading the charge, followed by the Moto G5 Plus and the newly launched Lenovo K8 Note. Camera on the Cool Play 6 will definitely be one of the deciding factors, as it competes well with hardware and software both.
