Micromax today launched a new product category, a convertible laptop-tablet hybrid aptly dubbed the Canvas LapTab. Now, if you remember the company showed off a dual-boot version back at CES but didn't launch it. The design is quite different here and now the Canvas LapTab runs Windows 8.1 exclusively, no dual-boot with Android.

Coming to specs it features a 10.1-inch IPS TouchScreen display, 1.33 GHz quad-core Intel Atom Z3735F processor with 2 GB RAM, 32 GB inbuilt storage running Windows 8.1 which is upgradable to Windows 10. There are 2 MP rear and 2 MP front cameras. You have 3G access with a micro-SIM card slot and storage is expandable via a microSD card slot.

The Canvas LapTab has been priced at Rs. 14,999 and will be available exclusively through Amazon starting May 6th. You get the keyboard within the box alongwith a USB OTG cable, and a pouch to carry the LapTab in.

Commenting on the launch Mr. Vineet Taneja, CEO, Micromax Informatics Ltd., said:

At Micromax, we have always believed in bringing the best in class and innovative devices to the consumers and have always aimed to bridge the gap between actual consumer device requirement and available device offering and hence, the Laptab promises to bridge the same at a very consumer friendly price point. Today’s launch marks our entry into the PC segment, where we intend to drive category growth and not only garner an available market share. We believe that our vision complements the initiatives for Digital India, and we will be launching a range of exciting products over the next few months in the category.

Tyler Bryson, General Manager, Marketing and Operations, Microsoft India who was also present at the event added:

The technology landscape has changed phenomenally over the past few years, and with it so has the way consumers use their devices. Increasingly people want devices that are mobile and lightweight and help them create while on the move, such as a student working on an assignment or a sales professional submitting a customer proposal. Windows devices excel at these tasks and with the Canvas Laptab, we are making personal computing very affordable. We are excited to partner with Micromax in their foray into this segment.

Ms. Debjani Ghosh, Vice President, Sales and Marketing Group and Managing Director, Intel South Asia, also commented on their collaboration with Micromax:

We are very proud of our collaboration with Micromax and I would like to congratulate them on expanding their footprint into personal computing further. With the introduction of the Intel® Processor powered Laptab, Micromax has strengthened its industry leadership position by being able to offer a comprehensive portfolio across form factors, which will help in getting technology in the hands of more Indian citizens.
