MediaTek has announced its next-gen 10nm process based Helio X30 deca-core processor. The new chipset will probably be fabricated in TSMC foundries.
All the curren-gen flagships use processors which are built on a 14/16nm process and going down to 10nm would make them more efficient both in terms of power management as well as thermals. Coming back to the Helio X30, it would pack 4 higher clocked Cortex-A73 cores running at 2.8GHz coupled with 4 2.2 GHz Cortex-A73 cores and two "LITTLE" Cortex-A53 cores running at 2GHz.
MediaTek didn't find many takers for its Helio X20 platform given Qualcomm's powerful mid-range chips like the Snapdragon 650 and Snapdragon 652. But the Helio X30 promises a lot more with a shift to PowerVR 7XT quad-core GPU, which is also used on the current-gen iPhone. Then there's support for 8GB LPDDR4 RAM, UFS 2.1 storage, a Cat.12 LTE modem with carrier aggregation and up to 26MP dual cameras.
In test benches the MediaTek Helio X30 has scored over 160,000 on AnTuTu besting the Snapdragon 820 by over 30,000 points. But we won't be seeing this chipset in smartphones anytime before June/July next year. Till then both Samsung and Qualcomm will have their new 10nm chips in the market as well.
