According to a report by TheElec, Samsung Display is exploring a new approach to manufacture the bezels of its foldable OLED panels this year. Instead of the previous method using micro dry process decoration (MDD) from supplier Segyung Hitech, Samsung Display is contemplating the use of inkjet printing for the bezels on the forthcoming foldable phones.

Inkjet printing allows for the creation of longer initial films compared to MDD, thereby enabling the production of more bezels from a single film. This potential efficiency may lead to reduced production costs.

Samsung Display has been under pressure from Samsung to decrease the manufacturing cost of foldable OLED panels, and this shift in bezel production method might contribute to achieving that objective.

The bezels on OLED panels serve the purpose of concealing internal circuits and components. These bezel films are applied subsequent to encapsulating the panels in thin films to safeguard against oxygen and water. After the attachment of bezels, ultra-thin glasses are laminated onto the panels to finalize the production process.

Although it remains uncertain whether there will be noticeable differences in the final product, the transition to inkjet printing could result in cost savings, potentially influencing the pricing of the anticipated Galaxy Z Fold6 and Flip6 set to debut later this year.
