MediaTek today unveiled its first big.LITTLE SoC MT8135 which is aimed at mid to high-end tablets. The new chipset will be able to operate both of its dual Cortex-A15 and dual Cortex-A7 cores simultaneously.
Another addition is the new PowerVR series 6 graphics processor which increases the performance throughput of the ALU by upto 4 times of the previous-gen Series 5XT. The difference between MediaTek and Samsung's implementation of the big.LITTLE architecture, is that MediaTek was able to create a scheduler algorithm which can allocate tasks to all the 4 cores simultaneously based on the computation power required. What this means is, for more powerful taks the Cortex-A15 cores are used, while for background or less cou intensive tasks the Cortex-A7 cores are used, saving on battery life.
The new MT8135 chipset has Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS and Miracast built right into it, plus it supports the new LPDDR3 RAM modules as well. The company is also touting the new chipset as being more battery efficient as well as powerful than several competitors, which can be seen in the video below.
But the chip-maker was mum on the actual availability of devices running this chipset.
