Apple has launched its first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo in the Global Market, including India. The new device features a dual-display design powered by the latest A20 Pro chip, a redesigned titanium chassis, and an updated version of iOS optimized for flexible screen configurations.
Hardware and Display Architecture
When unfolded, the iPhone Duo measures just 5.2mm thick, making it Apple's thinnest smartphone to date. It features a 7.6-inch inner Super Retina XDR display, while the folded device uses a 5.4-inch outer display that offers approximately 90% of the active screen area available on Apple's standard Pro models.
Both displays use matching aspect ratios to provide a consistent viewing experience when switching between the folded and unfolded configurations. They support ProMotion with adaptive refresh rates of up to 120Hz, Always-On functionality, and up to 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness. The inner panel also features a matte nano-texture finish intended to minimize reflections and make the folding crease less noticeable.
An under-display FaceTime camera is positioned beneath the inner folding screen, eliminating the need for a display cutout. The side button incorporates Touch ID for biometric authentication. Apple has also confirmed future support for the Apple Pencil with USB-C across both displays.
The chassis is constructed from grade 5 titanium and incorporates a 3D-printed hinge cover along with internal structural ribbing. The hinge mechanism contains more than 100 components engineered to control folding resistance and provide support to the displays. Custom adhesives within the glass assembly allow the internal layers to shift slightly during folding, helping reduce stress on the panel. The rear panel is protected by Ceramic Shield, while the outer cover glass uses Ceramic Shield 2. The device also carries an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance.
Performance, Battery, and Connectivity
The iPhone Duo is powered by Apple's 2nm A20 Pro system-on-chip, which includes a six-core CPU, a seven-core GPU, and a Dual 16-core Neural Engine.
- CPU: The six-core CPU delivers up to 20% higher performance compared with the A19 Pro.
- GPU: The seven-core GPU provides up to 40% faster graphics rendering.
- Neural Engine: The Dual 16-core Neural Engine is designed to deliver twice the on-device AI computing capability.
- Memory and Display Processing: Unified memory bandwidth has increased by 50%, while a dedicated display engine allows both screens to operate simultaneously.
For thermal management, Apple has integrated a custom vapor chamber directly with the SoC. Power is supplied through a split dual-battery architecture with dynamic energy rebalancing. The system is rated for up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner display, up to 44 hours on the outer display, or approximately 24 hours of mixed usage across both screens.
Wired charging can bring the battery to 50% in around 20 minutes using a 60W adapter or higher. MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging can reach 50% in approximately 30 minutes.
The iPhone Duo is eSIM-only globally. Wireless connectivity is handled by Apple's N1 chip, which supports Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread, while the C2 modem provides cellular connectivity, including support for U.S. mmWave networks.
Camera Hardware and Features
The rear camera system combines a 48MP Fusion Main camera with 2x optical-quality crop and sensor-shift stabilization with a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera that also supports macro photography.
Video features include 4K Dolby Vision recording at up to 120fps, post-capture Cinematic adjustments at up to 60fps, and algorithm-based audio isolation.
The foldable design also enables several specialized photography and video features:
- Duo Preview: Displays the camera viewfinder on the outer screen, making it easier to frame subjects while using the rear cameras.
- Smart Take: Uses on-device scene analysis to automatically trigger the shutter when subjects are ready for a photo.
- Rear Selfies: Allows users to capture selfies using the primary rear camera while monitoring the composition through the outer display.
- Kid Cue and Duo FaceTime: Kid Cue displays animations on the external screen to attract a child's attention, while Duo FaceTime can route secondary callers through the outer display during group conversations.
Software
The iPhone Duo runs iOS 27, which has been optimized for the foldable form factor. Core interface elements, including the Dock, Dynamic Island, and navigation controls, are repositioned laterally to make better use of the available vertical screen space.
The operating system introduces native Split View for running two applications side by side, side-by-side app pairing, support for dual-window app instances, and an expanded StandBy mode that works across both displays without requiring continuous external power.
iOS 27 also introduces Siri AI, a conversational assistant powered by Apple Intelligence that can use contextual information available on the device. Additional features include Spatial Reframing for photographs and support for SynthID watermarking standards.

Pricing and Availability
The iPhone Duo will be available in Star White and Night Sky colour options with 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB storage configurations.
The iPhone Duo will be sold through apple.com/store and the Apple Store app. Pre-orders will begin on Saturday, October 16, while retail availability is scheduled for October 23 across more than 70 countries and regions.
