Nokia Airtel next gen optical transport network.

Nokia has declared a collaboration with Bharti Airtel to implement a state-of-the-art optical transport network, enhancing capacity, reliability, and cost efficiency. This advancement aims to elevate service quality for Airtel's clientele. Within this partnership, Airtel will deploy Nokia's 1830 PSS-x OTN switches in its National Long-Distance Network, linking major cities in India.

The surge in 5G network launches and the nationwide push for broadband connectivity is intensifying the demands on Communication Service Providers (CSPs). This includes fortifying backhaul transport for more concentrated 5G mobile networks and extending wholesale connectivity for emerging sectors such as smart grids, datacenter interconnect (DCI), and various business services.

In response to this escalating traffic, transport networks necessitate upgrades to heighten overall transport capacity and bandwidth efficiency. This involves the incorporation of high-capacity OTN switching and harnessing additional spectrum, including L-band wavelengths of the fiber.

The augmented capacity positions Bharti to potentially deliver swifter and more dependable broadband services while staying prepared for new applications. Nokia's OTN solution empowers Bharti Airtel to seamlessly modernize its legacy transport switching infrastructure throughout its extensive network, addressing the surging demands for transport network traffic. Simultaneously, it enhances the overall performance and reliability of the network.

Chandan Kumar, Head of the Optical Network Business Centre for Nokia India, commented, "As a global leader in OTN, our technology will assist Airtel in enhancing the capacity and capabilities of Bharti’s optical transport network, meeting the escalating bandwidth requirements driven by enterprise and hyperscaler segments. It will also ensure service level performance, meeting the stringent SLAs from Airtel customers."
