Whatsapp Video Calling

WhatsApp introduced a video calling option in its latest beta app but the feature is not active yet.

With video-calling WhatsApp is planning to take on Skype and Hangouts and we may see the final build rollout soon. WhatsApp for Android (v20.16.80) showed up with the new feature but was later yanked with a new update.

Users who installed the earlier beta got an option for both audio and video call on pressing the call button which by default takes you directly to an Audio call. On choosing the video call option all you got was "Couldn't place call" since the feature was not enabled on the server side.

WhatsApp has been quite aggressive off-late with introduction of Desktop apps for Windows and Mac, alongwith option to send documents through its web, desktop interfaces.

Coming back to video calling, we are quite sure that WhatsApp will be taking the feature live very soon since the company has been testing the update for quite some time. First we heard of the feature was back in December when screenshots of the iOS version showed up with the feature. At present though there is no way to use the feature, and we would have to wait for the official rollout.
