Xiaomi Redmi 2

Xiaomi today launched the Redmi 2 at an event in New Delhi, India. The Redmi 2 is a comprehensive update over the popular Redmi 1S. You have a new improved 4.7-inch HD IPS display here which is fully laminated so there is no distance between the front glass and the display itself. This time around the Redmi 2 gets a 64-bit Quad-core Snapdragon 410 with 4G LTE support. There’s 1 GB RAM onboard, 8 GB storage and you now have an upgraded 2 MP front camera. There’s an 8 MP camera at the back which can record in 1080p, LED flash and a larger 2200 mAh battery underneath the back-cover. USB OTG is also supported on the device.

The Redmi 2 will come with MIUI 6 right out of the box but still built on Android 4.4 KitKat. But Xiaomi says that a Lollipop update is in the works for Redmi range of devices. Xiaomi will also later launch a Limited Edition Redmi 2 which will come with 2 GB RAM and 16 GB storage but at this time there is no word on availability or pricing.

Xiaomi Redmi 2 Specs and Photos

Connectivity options include 4G LTE support and that too on both SIM card slots, so you can use 4G LTE on any one slot at any given time. It is a dual-standby device. You also have WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0 LE, GPS and FM Radio.

You can register for the new Xiaomi Redmi 2 starting at 6 PM today. It will be available from March 24th via Flash sales for Rs. 6,999 and Motorola better watch out. The Redmi 2 just like the Moto E (2nd Gen) come after great success of their previous-gen devices. While the Redmi 2 has lost some weight and become svelte, the new Moto E is well a result of listening to consumers.

At this price and with these specifications, MIUI customization, the new 2015 Moto E has a very tough road ahead. Motorola however has an edge in meeting demand and supply, while Xiaomi will resort to its Flash sales, which have never been popular here. On paper however, the Redmi 2 seems and feels a lot better given its specs and pricing, but we will be taking a deeper look at both. SO stay tuned for our reviews on the new Moto E (2nd Gen) and the Xiaomi Redmi 2.
