Even though the iPhone 7 is water-resistant, liquid damage is not covered under warranty

First we came to know that the Jet Black iPhone 7 scratches easily and now this. Apple announced yesterday that both the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus were dust and water resistant with IP67 rating, now we have confirmation that the warranty on the phones does not cover liquid damage.

So, even though both are certified to survive up to 30 minutes in about a meter of water, Apple maintains IP67 isn't a permanent feature and may degrade over time. Sony too recently changed its tone on water damage saying your Xperia won't be covered under normal warranty if its submerged in water or any other liquid.

This is Apple's official position on warranty coverage for iPhone 7:

iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are splash, water, and dust resistant and were tested under controlled laboratory conditions with a rating of IP67 under IEC standard 60529. Splash, water, and dust resistance are not permanent conditions and resistance might decrease as a result of normal wear. Do not attempt to charge a wet iPhone; refer to the user guide for cleaning and drying instructions. Liquid damage not covered under warranty.

Which does seem to be a cop-out or is the company really not sure about its own water-proofing technique?
