Google has a new WiFi router, its not the OnHub system launched last year in partnership with Asus and TP-Link but something from Google's own in-house hardware unit. Simply called Google WiFi, it is a multipoint wireless routing system which automates band and traffic routing.
It works in a Mesh network where each Google WiFi unit creates its own wireless connection and then the different points are connected to each other. This provides for seamless coverage throughout your household with no dead zones.
Google has developed Network Assist which intelligently routes traffic from your phone/wireless device to the nearest Google WiFi device for faster access. It support AC1200 speeds and can work in 2.4GHz and 5GHz band simultaneously. You also have Bluetooth smart for easy pairing with mobile devices which can then then control the router using an app similar to OnHub routers. The companion app for Android and iOS lets you see devices connected to your network, pause traffic to particular devices, or prioritize particular connections as well.
Channel management and traffic congestion is handled automatically, but you can also jump into the app to take control of optimization. Given this is being catered as a complete solution, standalone units of Google WiFi have been priced at $129 while a three-pack will cost just $299, which is a way better deal for better coverage. The Google WiFi router will be going on pre-order in November with shipments starting in December.
