Apple’s use of a square sensor for the selfie camera on the iPhone 17 series may influence other smartphone brands, with a new rumor suggesting that Huawei and Oppo could be the next Chinese brands to adopt the new square sensor in their upcoming phones.
According to tipster Digital Chat Station, both Huawei and Oppo are currently testing 1:1 square sensors for front-facing cameras. The leak suggests that Huawei may debut the square selfie sensor on its camera-focused mid-range phones, possibly starting with the Nova 16 series.
Oppo, on the other hand, is said to be planning to include a square front-facing camera sensor in its flagship lineup, likely beginning with the Find X10 series. The tipster claims that Oppo’s implementation could be more advanced than Apple’s.
Apple equipped the iPhone 17 series with an 18MP front camera featuring a 1:1 square sensor and auto-zoom support. The square format allows users to shoot comfortably in both portrait and landscape orientations without rotating the device.
It remains unclear whether OPPO will adopt a true square sensor or rely on a similar workaround, as the leak does not reveal details such as resolution, pixel size, or whether software-based cropping will still be involved.
The Find X10 series is expected to launch later in 2026, and if OPPO moves ahead with this approach, it could mark one of the most significant usability upgrades to front-facing cameras on Android flagships in recent years.
