Google has announced that it is acquiring cloud software major Apigee Corp for $625 million to boost its cloud offerings for enterprise customers.

Apigee software APIs help connect apps and company's internal digital services. Google will be paying Apigee $17.40 per share a 6.5% premium over their stock price on Wednesday.

There are some high profile clients under Apigee including AT&T, Burberry Goulp Plc, Vodafone Group Plc and the World Bank. Diane Greene, Google's cloud computing chief said that the Apigee acquisition would redouble Google's momentum on its cloud efforts:

The addition of Apigee’s API solutions to Google cloud will accelerate our customers’ move to supporting their businesses with high quality digital interactions. Apigee will make it much easier for the requisite APIs to be implemented and published with excellence.

This sits well with Sundar Pichai, Google CEO's vision of streamlining their cloud engineering efforts. The shift to mobile devices and the requirement to be always connected with clients / customers has pushed interest in the cloud computing field through the stratosphere. There is huge demand for out of the box solutions that simply plug into an enterprise's current software system.

According to analyst Patrick Moorhead of Moor Insights and Strategy added that Google had fallen behind Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web services when it comes to enterprise cloud computing and with this acquisition they can improve their position.
